Engine braking to stop by downshifting too soon, i.e. chirping the tires, will perhaps wear the tires prematurely and could lead to a loss of control. However, using engine braking while normal riding, especially in the twisties, i.e. keeping the motor at higher rpms and using engine braking to slow some for turns, should lead to smoother riding!

The ideal run through the mountains for me is miles of the same gear and not touching the brakes! :)

I'm sure that works with transverse-mounted engines, but I wouldn't think it would do any good with an the R1150R crankshaft engine layout. Am I wrong?

I'm thinking about the middle-school day that they take a bicycle tire and hold it by the axel. Wouldn't leaning left or right on our bike be the same as just twisting the axel in you fingers? I seem to remember MotoGP experiments with square fours to combat a transverse engine's resistance to leaning the bike...
