Painting the hardbags?

Post by Karamazov »

Hey all! Been awhile. Hope everyone is enjoying the riding season.

Question: Anybody thought about color matching their hardbags to the bodywork? Is it possible? After the bike was hit, my bags got scuffed up a bit. I thought this might be a good time to have them painted...

The bags are the same as on the RT, where they are painted to match.
IIRC, a member here (caroanbill?) either had, or is in the process of having them, matched.

Here's the post where he's mentioning the color matching:

So, yes it is possible.

If you go to a bodyshop that is experienced in painting bumpers etc. (flex agent for the paint) it shouldn't be an issue. Just remember the minute you do that, you'll have to be even more careful about scuffing the tops with your boots - I know I always seems to hit mine.

Yep, I'll be painting my bags and top case in crystal grey.

But not yet ... it only arrived last Thursday and I'm taking on a 4,000+km trip tomorrow through western New South Wales and Queensland. No time to paint, and anyway the paint would still be too soft - the outback stones would simply cut it to bits.

I'll paint them in a couple of weeks. My dealer (Procycles) has a tame painter who's done many sets, computer and sight matches and - I'm assured - will do a great job.

It ain't cheap: $600AUD for a first quality effort.

I have also got the lower case protectors from the R1200RT - there are a lot of small stons thrown up on Aussie backroads. These add $200 AUD -- ouch. I'll also be putting the topcase backrest on.

It does seem a more practical
thing to me to just get the bike painted flat black. Oh course that's just me. My bags are for putting poo into to go camping.

Hi All,
I'm having my bags painted crystal grey, even as we speak. Found a local custom painting shop, discovered he's painted the R1200R bags previously, and left mine with him. They will be ready tomorrow. The Parabellum Scout Fairing should be arriving soon, so I'm getting close to having the R just about the way I want it.

Just dropped my bags and topcase in this weekend - should be a couple of weeks because I want to let the paint harden before the protection bits and badges go back on.

Cost is still $600 AUD, plus protection bits. Pricey, but I think it'll be worth it ... I'm hoping the bike will give of the aura of a 75/5 long wheelbase with white Pressley bags, american bars (as we call 'em) and a touring screen ...

Pics in a few weeks
