Brake line problem/repair

Post by Thinman »

Just a head's up - I was on the start of a week-long trip on Sunday (10/14) outside of St. Louis when I noticed the front brake feel mushy. Awhile later I noticed the front brake fluid reservoir very low, and after I stopped and squeezed the lever some more, the rest of the fluid vanished, and ended up leaking onto the exhaust pipe below the frame. Unfortunately, the dealers in St. Louis were closed until Tuesday, but as soon as I rolled into Gateway BMW they where on it without even a "please" from me. Shannon and the guys there were great. Turns out the fitting on the brake line that goes into the reservoir/junction under the tank must have developed a hairline crack. New part was ordered and installed Weds morning and I was on my way again. Must be a unique occurence, because I haven't heard of anyone else having a problem - but if you do notice low fluid, there's one place to look.

Another thanks to Gateway - nice dealership and very nice people. Even gave us some riding suggestions for the days we were in St. Louis (on my wife's F800ST two-up).

I'll keep an eye on it. Don't you need a special tool to remove the brake fluid resovior cap?
