What touch down first?

Yesterday, I rode up and down a local mountain road with numerous switchbacks and hairpins with the specific aim of determining what touched first. I never succeded in grounding a part even when leaned way, way over. I even turned my toes outward, trying to see if they would scrape, to no avail.

I'm really impressed with the "curveability" of the Roadster but I wonder how close I was to my aim. Admittedly, I'm no Valentino Rossi but I thought I was pushing pretty hard. To those who have actually dragged something, what touches down first?

It varies on the type of curve and your suspension settings and conditions. Usually, when I am being lazy in my foot position, it is the outside of my foot! Otherwise, I think it would be somewhere on the centerstand. I have never, ever threatened to scape the valve covers - unless the rest of the bike was on the way to join it! (see Towerworker's post above!)

Normally the first thing to touch would be the wear pins on the foot pegs, next will be the bags if you are so equipped, then you'll scrape the knees and last we hope you have some good riding gear on because you will loose some ofr it after the skid on the pavement.................

Like wncbmw said, it probably varies depending on factors he mentioned, plus total weight, but while swooping into a left-hand curve with an unexpected dip in the middle riding two-up, I touched (and broke off) the metal feeler on the end of the left footpeg. I suspect that's exactly what the engineers designed to have touch first to give you a not-too-startling, yet not-too-subtle indicator that you are close to the cornering limit. BTW, both feelers on my bike are scraped, and I have felt and/or heard them when they've hit most of the time, but not always. I say this because after a nice ride with the new feeler that I didn't think I had bumped, it was scraped up, so I don't think I always notice when they touch, but when one lifts the sprung footpeg under my foot, I notice.

Thanks, everybody! Obviously I was not pushing to the limit. Well, I was going at my own personal limit but not at the motorcycle's. This machine is just incredible and I'm more impressed the longer I ride it.

ChiTown needs to reply to this thread. I recall a photo of him carving through the twisties of Deal's Gap with his 1200R trailing sparks. Closeup photos revealed a ground down brake lever, foot peg and even the valve cover.

Last Sunday I think it was my shoulder but could have been the valve cover. I know for certain the blinkers touched because they were lying in the mud where I did the huge dirt-track-full-lock-slide followed by a comical low speed high-side.

1. Centrestand through bumpy turns 2.. footpegs 3... LH valve cover. I never did manage to get the RH valve cover to touch down - it's slightly further back than the left...
My new R1200R is much narrower at the pegs so clearance is better.

I have scraped down both my metal feelers on my pegs.
Sometimes it's by mistake.
