But that's a whole separate report... The point is this. I stick this baby in my pocket, plug in some earbuds and I'm off. It has voice command with increasing volume based on speed.
Question was what earbuds to use. I did some reasearch and figured I didn't want to pay for noise canceling. The best one's on the low cost scale seemed to be these JVC units.

The covers are foam and can be removed/replaced.

Good idea, but the foam is too dense; it doesn't conform and it lets some sound through. I want something that conforms to my ears, doesn't put pressure on them, and blocks sound better. So, I got to thinking...

They are very squishy, conform, and really block the sound. So, I cut a couple of them to length with scissors. When you cut them they deform, but they come back to shape.

I then tried various ways to drill a hole in the center of each foam piece... without much success... Then I had a brainfart.... I took a decent size nail, grabbed the nail with a pair of vise grips, heated the nail up by putting it in a flame on my stove, and when it was hot enough I gently pushed it through the center of the foam piece. The result is the correct size hole for the foam to fit on my earbuds

I used just a drop of water on the inside of the foam to act as a lubricant to slip them on the earbuds.. and we have the finished product:

They fit great and block sound much better, and I can get replacements for pennies...
Just a note, if you try this. Heat the nail gradually to the temperature you need. If it's not hot enough it will not penetrate the foam. If it's too hot it will still work but you'll get more smoke as the nail goes through. And of course, do this in a well ventilated area and keep your face out of the smoke. No.. there's no fire.. just smoke, as the foam/plastic that comes in contact with the nail melts and overheats. Yeah, you may need a few foam pieces to experiment with.
