2002 R1150R
Is there a big problem with the single spark R1150R's ? I had a 2002 single spark RT and it surged real bad . I now have an 04 RT and it always runs great. I found an 02 R1150R and I'm considering buying it . Any advice would be appreciated.
Re: 2002 R1150R
I had an'03 single spark, and have a '04 dual spark. I do not notice any difference between the two. If the bike has been tuned (valve adjust, and B sync), I would not see a problem.

My R1150R was an '02 and no problems at all (traded it in at 26K miles).
I miss it

Keep it well tuned and you'll be happy!
Free advise: learn how to tune it yourself, and you will always know it is done correctly.
Don't always think that just because the dealer tunes it, you are getting top notch service. There are lots of crappy tune-ups done by sloppy mechanics trying to beat the shop clock.

My '02 single spark never surged but it did occasionally stumble and even stall when you blipped the throttle.
My new R12R runs a lot leaner with much better fuel consumption and would only ever stall within a minute of start up.

Listen to Twindave. Di it yourself and you know it is done correctly. The dealer set my 2002 up and it surged! I did a valve adjustment and a TB synch and it hasn't surged. It took me a while to feel confident on doing the TB, having only had carbed bikes, but it was the same. Love my 2002 RR

My '02 has never surged significantly and if I notice it, it usually means it is time for a TB sinc, then the slight problem becomes no problem.

I do my own valves and TBS on my RT. I learned long ago how dealers may rush and not do a good job. I'm trrying to decide if I should drive 2 1/2 hours to check it out. It's the yellow and blue version. I've seen pictures but never in person. I can't decide if I like the color and it may look different in person.

Richard I wouldn't go, as I know if I took it for a ride it would follow me home. Mine did that and I had to ask the wife "It followed me home can I keep it?" I have the perfect wife and she said if I took care of it and fed it I could keep it.

Re: 2002 R1150R
The surge occurred more often in the higher tuned versions: RT, RS, S. In both the GS and the R the surge is minimized to begin with, but some bikes are plagued. Better quality gas (not just higher octane, but truly better quality sources), valve adjust and TBS, TPS adjustment, and rider technique seem to be the road proven solutions to avoiding the effect.

As per the others, my '02 single plug R1150R has never had surging problems. Even with the valves not being touched (yet).

We've got an '02 and an '04 dual-plug. No discernable difference in surging between the two, and both run strong. Right now, the '02 runs smoother, but that's probably 'cause its motor is broken in, while the '04 needs a good year of thrashing to "season".
