My dad brought his beakster over this weekend and we got some work done on the two bikes. Got a few mod's done and did most of the 12k service for the two bikes.
* Both bikes got the fuel filter relocated and replaced. We took it out from inside the gas tank and mounted a new filter in the ABS area. We used the Luber Finer FF3424 (formerly the Deutsche FF424) from Autozone. The Luber Finer 3401 (formerly Deutsche FF401) is $1 more and doesn't have the useless pieces of hose and clamps that come with the FF3424. You can get the proper screw-down fuel injection clamps (not the worm drive band ones) at any auto parts store. If you want the roundel on them, they are about 4x the price and the correct part number is: 13 31 1 460 928. It was tricky to get the pump/filter assembly out of the tank without damaging anything (like the strainer) or removing the vent hoses. I'm very glad we got the fuel filter out of there, so there's no going back in for a long while.
* Both bikes got the QD's replaced with the Omega metal ones. Both sides are shut-off. Part numbers are FT-LCD170-05 and FT-LCD220-05 from Omega. You will need two of each per bike.
* Clutch fluid replacement on both bikes. Once we figured out how to do it, it was easy to do the old fashioned way (one person works the bleeder and one pumps). For some reason we had a time getting the bleed screw to work right (dunno why, neither one of us is new to bleeding brakes). We got the rubber covers and just left the bleeders in place (didn't put the grub screw back in). The part number for the clutch bleeder is 34 21 2 330 310 and the appropriate rubber cover is 34 21 1 236 794. Put the rubber cover on the bleeder, take the grub screw out and screw the bleeder in.
* Brake fluid replacement on both bikes. No surprises here. Used a vacuum bleeder and this was quick and easy.
* Air filter replacement on both bikes. No surprises other than how dirty the filters were after 12k miles.
* Installed second 12V socket on my bike. My dad already had put his tank back on so we'll do his next weekend. For this, we used the "Y" cable (I think for a GS) for adding a second accessory socket. The part number for the cable is 61 13 2 316 114. It plugs into the wiring harness (on the bike side) for the accessory socket. A short piece of wire on the Y goes to the accessory socket and another long end goes to wherever you want, presumably to plug into another accessory socket. It's the wire only (no socket) that comes with this kit: Additional Accesory Outlet. I cut off the plug on the long end, ran it up under the tank and out between the tank and seat above the airbox. I then cut the end off an SAE extension cord (a nice 3' one with a cover from Eastern Beaver: SAE Extension Cord - obviously I kept the covered end on the long side) and connected that to the "Y" cable (I used M/F spade connectors between the two cables so I can change the ends around easily if I ever need to). I now have an SAE connector that is easy to slide into the tankbag when needed and hides under the tank when not being used. All without any modification to the bike's wiring harness. Pick up this 3-way outlet at Radio Shack and drop it in the bottom of the tankbag. It will plug directly into the SAE cord or you can attach the included cig lighter adapter and use it in your cage.
* We also did a few other little things on my dad's bike that I had already done on mine: drain transmission and final drive (he had already done his engine oil and filter) and valve adjustment.
* We started to attempt a TB sync, but using straight 1/8" tubing wasn't working for us (as far as getting the water in and settled) and it was getting late so we put that off until next weekend until we can get a proper manometer made.
I'm going to his place next weekend and we're gonna try and get some electrics knocked out and fab up some brackets for the horns and driving lights. The horn (Stebel Nautilus) and relays for both driving lights and headlight (and the previously installed fuel filter) are all going in the ABS space. For the horn, we are leaving the stock horn in place so we might be able to get a short beep out of the stock horn if desired, without having the air horn come on full blast.
