sidestand is too short

Post by mrbreeze »

The sidestand on my R1100RL is too short. This bike has the 18" spoked front wheel, rather than the 17" wheel on the R1100R. Maybe that contributes to the problem. Anyway, when the bike is on the sidestand it is quite easy to pull it over to the left. Not too much of a problem until the bike is loaded for a weeklong camping trip. Then getting on and off without toppling over becomes a challenge.

has anyone found a cure for this? I have a 1/2" thick block of wood on a string, but I would prefer to have a longer sidestand. Would a sidestand from an R1100GS work?

If you return it to original specifications wouldnt that be the best remedy
rather than compounding the situation.

The 18" wheel is the OEM piece - is that what you mean?

From my understanding the 18 inch is on the rear only , the front should be 17 inch.

the r1100r has a 17 " front wheel, but the RL version has the spoked wheels, and the front is 18 ". It's narrower too.

I'd take the stand to my local welder and pay him $15 to cut it and add some material in the middle. I had to do this to my EX250 when I raised the suspension on it to make it into a better city bike.

I did that with my F650GS and it worked a treat. The hard rubber puck also meant it had good grip on tarmac and it increased the footprint size which was good for soft surfaces... however some guys in the F650 forum (the chain gang) reckoned it looked like an orthopedic shoe for a bike

A more stock look would be to get the stand lengthened as mentioned... get them to weld on a slightly larger foot as well. I did this on my 850 because I thought that considering these are not light bikes the standard foot is tiny and likely to sink into soft surfaces.

cheers
