Sudden Battery Death
Saturday Sept 20th, 2008 was riding along at 40 MPH and everything shut down, just like I turned off the key! Won't jump start, only clicks from the starter. Weird LCD display when key switched to the off position. I have only 16K on my 2007 R1200R completely stock with no add-on electrical stuff. Dealer will replace it fully and those babies are up to $190.00 now! BMW roadside assistance arranged for a tow promptly----it was a 5 hr hassle because there was nowhere I could have gotten a substitute battery and 110 miles from home.
The day I can't go to work drunk is the day I'll turn in my badge and gun!

I hate that you've got this problem but I love your byline or what ever we call it."The day I can't go to work drunk is the day I'll turn in my badge and gun!"

Funny this is the first post I noticed logging in. I had been blasting around Baton Rouge all day and stopped for lunch. On leaving I hit the starter and the starter bumped and quit. The guages blanked too. Happily the dealership was close and had a battery.
Interestingly I tried jump starting which worked fine until getting into gear and trying to move at which time the computer shut off everything!
Must be something in the air today killing batteries instantly. fYI, the bike is stored with the BMW charged floating the battery. $140.00 later back on the road!

I had the same instant death battery a few months ago. I guess it is going around. It is a defect.ka5ysy wrote: Must be something in the air today killing batteries instantly. fYI, the bike is stored with the BMW charged floating the battery. $140.00 later back on the road!

Re: Sudden Battery Death
This is bad that battery's are only lasting such a short time . My recently sold 1150gsa did 5yrs 2 months on the original battery, never on a charger. Longest lay off time 3 weeks (we ride all year round here) . Why do we support this bad service from the corporate world, technology is there to make better batteries than this.

We need to get Optima to make a motorcycle battery to stop this nonsense!

Re: Sudden Battery Death
I believe it is a defect. mine died completely before 6000 miles on my 2007. It happened to be dead the day I was leaving for Moto GP - Laguna Seca. Fortunately A&S Cycles Roseville, CA replaced it very fast for me, no cost of course - they had a fully charged battery ready to go and I was only slightly delayed. But yes, as for battery life, whatever they're putting in stock must not be too great.
