Fuel disconnect sources

Post by kantuckid »

I'm getting ready to buy a set for my R1150R(first set got stolen with my luggage before I installed!)and when I priced from Omega Engineering they had gone up from a year ago-surprise!- were $$65.06 plus $7 ride and now $84 + ride! Beemerboneyard is selling the same brass kit with clamps for $79.95 + -is this the best deal out there? Thanks

I don't know about other sources for the metal fittings, but I came across these when I was looking up the grip heaters in another post:

Anyone have experience with them?

couple of things; I tried the small parts fittings and removed them because it was, for me, VERY difficult to re-attach them after they were used. I switched over to 5/16 brass tubing.

They are a hassle to use, but elegantly simple.

The other thing is the mechanic at my local dealer said that BMW has a new quik-disconnect that is metal and not that expensive--he guessed ~~$50

I did not look into that, but that is what he said--anyone know about the veracity of that?

$50 for one? or enough to do a bike? Elaborate on the brass tubing- are you saying double barbed brass? Is the hassle the idea of no fuel cut-off when disconnected? I'll buy the ones on my PM , "IF" that is the way I decide to go,thanks

I installed the chrome/brass fittings from Beemerboneyard. They're solidly built and I haven't had a problem. Few things... the hose clamps that BMW uses are a bitch to remove (this has been well documented). The barbs on the existing plastic fittings make it a difficult removal process. Before you start, drain the tank a little and go to the local autoparts store to pick up a couple more injector clamps just in case you mess up. When you plug everything together and start the bike (remember to set the Motronic per the manual), if the bike makes a loud scream, it probably means you haven't correctly mated one or both connectors. Hope this helps.

I have installed the disconnects before as it is well known , they do break! The BMW type of clamp is easy to disengage but harder to reuse. If I remember correctly you just poke a very small screwdriver in the crimped hump and twist and they pop apart. Easier to do than say when not having one nearby...

My "impression" was 50 for the pair, but it was a very loose conversation. Please post what you discover if you do the homework on this.

my brass tubing is not barbed, but some have used barbed tubing.

The hassle is working with them as you suggest. You need a couple of hose pinches for that. You can get them at pep boys.

And

You shouldn't have to reset the Motronic just changing these out, right?

I have never reset anything in changing these prior-just pinched of popped the clamp and replaced. I never had a problem removing an old disconnect nor have I ever had to mess with the Motronic as a part of the job. I did forget to plug back "the wires" that make the bike run and wondered why it wouldn't start-duh! I don't think I want to use barbs as it complicates raising the tank while on a trip. I'm still looking for whats out there to do the job(I've read all the old threads on this before-here and Advrider and so far the Omegas are the ones to use-no matter where you get them).

I used the Omega's and have been very happy with them. A bit costly (about $80 with shipping as I recall), but they will last for the life of the bike, albeit with an occasional O-ring renewal. The part numbers that work for 8mmx13mm fuel hose (approx ~5/16", which I think covers nearly all of the R850 - R1200 range) are:
FT-LCD170-05 Brass Coupling Bodies, Inline and
FT-LCD220-05 Brass Coupling Insert, Straight
http://www.omega.com/ppt/pptsc.asp?ref=FTLC
Obviously, you need 2 of each. They come standard with Buna-N O-rings but you can specify Viton if you like. There's a bit of an argument over which material is better to use; I personally think Buna-N is fine and have had no problems after removing the tank at least 3 times in the past 24 months. I always use a dab of Li grease on the O-rings. YMMV.

It looked to me as if the QDs from Beemer Boneyard are similar to the Omegas. BB is a very good company to deal with, so either should be fine. I believe that the Smallparts QDs have the O-ring seated inside the female part of the connector rather than on the male tube - I stayed away from them for that reason. Again, YMMV.

I bought one double barb brass 5/16" fitting @ Oreilly's for $1.69 and I'm going to carry it on the bike @ all times along with something to remove the OEM fitting if it breaks and I am protected on the road.

If you installed the Omegas, you wouldn't have to worry about the fitting breaking . . . :p
(but it's still prudent to carry a couple of extra O rings!)

Yeah. You gotta be careful when the old females start giving you the clamps.

I went the brass pipe route too, then realized it was time to upgrade. Got the chrome plated brass ones from Omega for about $80, along with all new EFI fuel lines. They've been unplugged/plugged twice so far with near zero effort and what can only be described as a solid, quality feel. I'm glad I did it . . . . and it should'a been sooner =D>

I know I need to bite the bullet and opt for the brass ones! You look @ the the plastic cross eyed and they break! I was raised by the "children of the depression"(my Mother grew up on squirrel and various other wild critters during the depression-she would cook my game when I was a kid but never ate a bite of them , no matter what it was!) and my lessons were well learned at being a tightwad...

After reading this posting I decided to get off rump and order the Omegas. The total was $86 with shipping (cheapest available $8). Plus since I was a first time customer I got a free gift....not sure if that interests anyone. They give a you choice of gifts in exchange for filling out a survey. I opted for the multi meter, it is another item that I figure is good to have around and have never got around to purchasing.
