To sell with or without farkles.

Post by cadhopper »

I really miss having a dual sport and regret selling my F650GS after buying a 2005 R1150R Rockster. I'm thinking about buying another dual sport but only have enough storage room for one bike so the Rockster has to go.

The question is do I sell the bike with or without the farkles? My dealer tells me to strip the bike and sell it stock but I would like to here what you guys and gals have to say.

Here's a list of the things I've added.
Ohlins shocks (about 1200 miles on them)
Wunderlich engine guard with PIAA driving lights
Wunderlich driver footpeg lowering brackets
Sargent seat (still waiting for delivery) :?
GIVI top rack with case
BMW side cases
BMW GS Hand Guards
BMW cylinder head guards
Rockster Touring Windscreen

Thanks for any advise.

Remove the farkles you'll do better in the long run. The stuff you have wil sell quickly if priced right, with the bike you might get 10 cents on the dollar......on the other hand, someone out there might want it set up the way it is.

Feel your way and then decide......

I would be interested in the luggage and hand guards. Don

That's something I've been wondering, too.

I've got my 2004 R1150R pretty farkled up, and am considering selling it for something smaller and lighter (an F800S is on my radar screen).

I've considered offering it at a higher price point as is (with some room for negotiation) in the hopes of finding someone who wants it set up as is, but then listing the amount I would be willing to take off for each farkle removed. That way if the buyer is more interested in a lower price than that particular farkle, they would get what they want and I would sell the farkle separately.

For example (prices are simply used for example since I've not researched market value):

2004 R1150R, black, non-abs, 25,000 miles, excellent condition, $7,500 including:

--BMW system cases (remove $400)
--Givi rack and top box with integrated brakelight and backrest (remove $150)
--fork mounted MotoLights (remove $200)
--touring windscreen and mounts (remove $150)

Thoughts on this approach?

I would be interested in that givi topcase and rack if you decide to sell seperately.

Heh -- if and when the time comes, I'll let you know (I'll also be sure to post things in the classified section).

I'm taking the bike to Morton's BMW next week for the 6K service and new tires. It's sad, I put over 18K on my F650GS in the first year I owned it but I have only put a little over 3K on the R1150R since I bought it in 2007. I will see what the dealer offers me for trade-in on the stock bike for a new F800GS. If they give me a decent deal I will list all the extra stuff in the classified section.

I think the number of people putting in the word for various farkles before you even have them for sale sort of answers the question for you! ;)

If I were selling my bike, I would perhaps sell it with the luggage, since most people want that. Everything else, I would sell separately. Like boxermania said, you will only get a fraction of the worth by leaving the stuff on the bike. The dealer can't give you the value on trade and many people shopping for a bike don't appreciate the value of a Sargent seat or Ohlins until they have ridden a while.

After a while, they will be searching the classified section here, on IBMWR or Craigslist looking for the same stuff you had on it that they wouldn't have paid for when they bought it! :P

I would agree, I took off the Wunderlich touring handlebars today. I kept the all the original parts so I will most likely switch out the Ohlins shocks, top luggage mount and engine guard tomorrow. If the dealer does not make me a decent offer I will try to sell the bike with the side cases and maybe the touring windscreen. It seems they are selling for around 6 to 7K in the classified section so that does not seem to bad. Thanks for the advice and be safe.

The bike is located in Virginia. I live between Richmond and Fredericksburg off I95. The bike will most likely be for sale next week depending on how soon the dealer can get the 6K service done.

Here is a picture of the bike with the side cases, hand guards and touring windscreen.

If priced right, I would be interested in the driver peg lowering kit.

The footpeg brackets have been listed on E-Bay.

I'd be interested in the seat (if it shows up), the windshield, and if you want, the luggage grid.
