just finished my valves and TB sync
So I just gave my beautiful rockster a Valve adjustment and a TB sync. I am amazed. It runs like an entirely new bike. Before when I would roll off the throttle or lug down the engine, my bike was back firing a lot. That issue is completely gone. My rockster takes off like crazy now (well even more so than before). I have to watch how fast I twist my throttle or my front tire picks up. The only issue I have is that before I performed my tb sync if I closed my throttle my bike would stop like I was slamming on the brakes, so I got used to riding like that. I noticed that now after my TB sync my RPMs don't drop suddenly, the RPMs stay up and slowly fall back down to idle. Is that supposed to happen or are the RPMs supposed to drop suddenly like my bike was doing before? It makes me a little nervous, because I have to use my brakes a lot more. Not a bad thing, but I need to re-adjust my riding style.

I think somebody stole your bike and replaced it with a much faster look-alike.I have to watch how fast I twist my throttle or my front tire picks up.
I can't say about the RPM's dropping thing.
Most folks will tell you that the bike has a strong "engine brake". Your throttle valves may not be completly seating at closed throttle (they should). Did you pull out the Big Brass screws? Those bypasses may be clogged up. You may have compensated by cracking open the butterflies open at idle. If they are clogged, spraying some carb cleaner in there (after pulling out the Big Brass screws and cleaning them) should help. Another thought is that the fast-idle system is not working quite right.
Or maybe the bike was goofy before and you just got used to it, and now it's perfect. It's tough to tell over the internet.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...
Re: just finished my valves and TB sync
Yeah I'm not sure either. I have to say that over all the bike is running much better than before, so I guess I'm not so worried about the "engine brake." I will have to have somebody else take a ride and see what they think about how fast the RPMs drop off. Over all I think I'm fine with it.
And if somebody wanted to steal my bike and replace it, then they should have stuck around for a beer!

Re: just finished my valves and TB sync
Does anyone know of a link to instructions (an idiots guide) to TB synchronisation ?
I do most of the maintenance to my '03 1150R but feel a nervous about TB sync and end up just leaving it since it doesn't run too bad.

Thanks JF, looks like a good write up (haven't read it all yet though).
Do you do your own sync, if so how do you rate the instructions?

I used that same document to walk me through. I used a combination of that document and my Clymer guide. I however didn't use the instrument indicated in the TBS4D. I used a normal manometer. So I'm sure those instructions would work better if you use the same instrument.

Re: just finished my valves and TB sync
Thanks, I have access to a buddy's Carbtune (basically a mercury manometer I think), and hope to make use of this. Any reason I should't, or tips on how to do a good job?

Re: just finished my valves and TB sync
I have not used these instructions yet, but their write up for checking/adjusting the valves has been very useful to me. I've used them at least twice now, and haven't grenaded the motor yet. More snow is set to hit my area tomorrow, so that means more salt, which means more parking of the bike. I hope to have the time to use the TB sync this weekend.929bladerunner wrote:Thanks JF, looks like a good write up (haven't read it all yet though).

That O.H.V.A.4.D. guide is awesome! I've never laughed so hard while reading a tech manual...
