Newbie Question...

Post by ND4SPD »

I recently purchased an '04 Rockster as a companion for the K1200RS... I've been doing a bit of reading re: TB syncing... My Clymer manual clearly states that the R1150R (along w/ the R850R & R1200C) requires syncing by the dealer using the MoDiTec unit... Does this sound right..? What would be the difference - they spell out the TB sync procedure for other models... Any input would be greatly appreciated - Thanks.

Hmmm. I've been doing my own valve adjustments and throttle syncing on my Ed80 Rockster since the 6K service... now at 46K miles.

The MoDiTec unit is simply the doo-hickey that reads fault codes. It doesn't "do" anything that I'm aware of. Get yourself a Haynes manual, or do some more searching.

Thats what I thought... I've only had my K bike hooked up to life support once to determine a code - not for adjustments... But not being familiar w/ The R bike, I thought I might be missing something... I've done all my own maint. on the K - I'm not stopping with this one... Thanks for helping clear this up.

Still not quite running right.... I performed the TB sync in the garage and on the road and it runs much smoother. However - it seems to have a flat spot... Rolling on the throttle it pulls pretty good, then 5k rpm - 6k rpm it gets weak and then livens up again until 7k rpm. It's odd - even during the "flat spot", if I roll the throttle off slightly it pulls/accellerates. It is more prevelent in higher gears - with speeds ranging from 60 - 90 - I can feel the bike bog down a bit. Even at 40 mph, at around 2700 - 3000 rpm, it has a surge and/or feels bucky. A little maint./bike history - I just bought the bike ('04 Rockster) from an independent dealer w/ 30k on the clock - ran good during test ride. The previous owner peformed the canisterectomy - sort of. I found he had the filler cap drain/tank vent lines flip flopped, and the solenoid in place and full of water. I completed the procedure by removing the solenoid and tubing - capping the vac ports on the TB. Since the purchase I installed new plugs (NGK iridium), cleaned K&N, fresh fluids (eng, trans, R/D), valves adjusted and now sync'd using twinmax. I did have the battery disconnected to connect a lead for a charger - I believe I performed the throttle rest correctly - key on (no start), roll throttle on/off three times and turn key off... Any ideas/thoughts..?? Thanks for any info/advice!

The flat spot has nothing to do with the throttlebody synchronization. It's there because of the way BMW tuned the fuel injection mapping and the only way to get rid of it is to get a Power Commander and put it on a dyno, or maybe a ZTechnik chip or some sort of similar device that changes the fuel map.

I understand the bikes are set up lean from BMW for emissions... I'm not sure the bike should have such a flat spot or have the feeling it's bogging down. I can't believe that's right... Any other ideas?

Surging could be caused by running lean, not sure if it would also cause your flat spot.
Before spending cash on Power Commander etc. have a look at post No 12 on this link to UKGSers http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread ... ht=steptoe

I tryed this on my1150r and it cured the surging at town speeds and also pulls stronger through the rev range.

I have been running my bike like this for over a year now.

hope this works for you.

OK - I'm getting more & more familiar w/ the bike and it's issues... I think I may have narrowed the problem down to failed stick coils.... After adjusting valves, syncing TB, changing plugs. Here is what I got... When running - I disconnected each primary coil one at a time and noticed absolutely no difference in how the engine runs. Knowing there are secondary plugs firing - I disconnected them both, and with both primaries connected, the bike would not start and only spit/sputtered. Reconnected the secondary plugs - bike starts and runs as before. This would lead me to belive both stick coils are failed - how likely is that??? Is there away to test the input signal/voltage to the coils to make sure they are in deed failed - what actually triggers them - I assume the computer. Is it safe to say the same input goes to the secondary coils? So if that coil works the other output should be OK...?? Any input/opinions would help on this - Thanks!!

For anyone interested... I have replaced both primary coils in attempt to eliminate my hard starting, surging and low power problems. This was the fix! =D> I resync'd the TB's, reset the idle, etc and the bike runs like a champ. Thanks for the input and guidance through this one!!
