I've been away from this forum for a while but hope to be a regular now!
I have a small problem at the moment - I was punted down the road by a car from a stop-sign a few days ago, to the detriment of the both panniers, although the BMW agent in Cognac (I live in France now) says the bike's fine (apart from the LH cylinder head protector which did its job before expiring!).
Both panniers are being replaced, and are being fitted with the lock cylinders from the existing panniers to keep the same keys. My problem is that the old panniers are not safe on the bike and I would have to get my wife to accompany me with them in our car to the dealer to change the locks - a half-hour journey. However, if I could take the barrels out of the old panniers I could take them to the dealers in my pocket to fit into the new boxes.
My question is - how easy is it to remove the lock barrels and how would I go about it?
Any advice welcomed.

Re: Changing Pannier locks
When you lift the handle, on the case underneath where the handle was blocking it, you will see a tiny hole on the lock barrell side. Using a tiny screwdriver or other equivalent tool, you insert into that hole and a release for the lock barrell will allow you to remove the barrell. VOILA!
Once its out, (I may be incorrect on this) if you remove the key, the little tumbler adjustment pieces will slide out. Be careful to secure those with tape before removing the key. They can be reused to set the lock properly if you get a new bike, etc. But if you leave them in with the key set, you don't have to worry about them.
Hope this helps.

I did it, and I rank my mechanical skill at around a "3" out of 10.
Re: Changing Pannier locks
Do replacement locks also include the metal plate that turns (with the key) which then prevents the handle moving ?
One of my recently purchased panniers has a broken plate, otherwise the lock seems to function as normal...

No, it doesn't. I would call a dealership and ask about whether they can source those plates for you.fazer1k wrote:Do replacement locks also include the metal plate that turns (with the key) which then prevents the handle moving ?

Have a look at these sites. They give detailed descriptions (including pictures) of how to rekey system case locks. - the first step of which is to remove the old lock. While these instructions refer specifically to 1100RT and 1200RT system cases you may still find them useful.

The instructions are so good you may decide to do it yourself.
