Mystery Oil Burning Smell

Post by bdarling »

I changed the oil on my '95 1100R a couple weekends ago and I have been smelling burning oil every ride since. I have crawled around the bike and inspected every single place that oil could possibly come into contact with hot exhaust or engine parts and I am baffled. I keep my engine pretty darn clean and I can find no evidence of oil leaking...anywhere! Is it possible that I overfilled the crank case (the oil is about 3/4 up the sight glass) and oil has migrated into the airbox? If oil is in the airbox, would it find its way into the throttle bodies, thus into the combustion stream?

I wouldn't worry about it. If your oil level is within the big circle on the sight glass after setting on the center stand for over ten minutes then you are okay. You probably spilled some oil somewhere that slowly burning off.
