Helmet most likely saw just what the rider was looking at.
Good lesson to be learned.
Don't trust your life to all the high tech stuff. When it comes right down to it whether you go home after your ride, or to the hospital (or worse) usually depends on the actions of the person with his/her ass on the seat and hands on the bars.
