Rear preload with passenger?

Post by billington92 »

My wife is going to ride pillion with me on my R1150R (without luggage). Hence I will set the tyre pressure to 36psi front and 39psi rear. However I’m not sure what to do with the remote preload adjuster. Should I turn it to higher or lower?

Also how will turning the preload affect the ride and what does it actually do to the shock mechanism?

I weigh 83 KG (182lbs), my wife is about 57 kg (125lbs).

Hey Billington2,
We ride two up on our R all the time.. it's a great bike for hitting the twisties two up.. Of course, suspension set up can be very 'personal'. For pressures (which doesn't really matter) we run with Michilen PR3's at 38-40 psi. Also, we run with a pretty high amount of preload on the rear shock, it helps with bottoming out and reducing the amount of sag. If we run w/o the preload dialed up, the bike runs a bit soft in the rear end and doesn't feel as sure footed when in the twisties. There are all kinds of documents out there for suspension setup, Lee Parks Total Control is a good one - highly recommended, but sometimes a bit of trial and error can go a long way. I'm sure someone can come up with the right formula of preload/rebound damping... we've just found for our style of riding about a little more than halfway into the adjustment works for us.

Good Luck
