My best friend and I had planned to meet today in Narrows, VA and ride down 61 and over into Burkes Garden. I asked if my son wanted to go with me, and he agreed.
Tyler is 11 and has been on short rides with me but today was the first real ride where we coverd some miles and had to take rest stops. I got him up early (not easy) and bundled him up because it was cold outside at 8:30 this morning. We met my friend Jeff who has Roadstar that's customized beyond recognition (nice bike actually). I don't get to see Jeff much and ride with him even less, but every year we manage to get together for some kind of ride around 9/11.
We had a great ride. Ran into a guy we went to high school with who was leading a group of about 6 guys on all different kinds of bikes. When we stopped at the General Store in the Garden I spied an Atlanta Blue R parked out front among a sea of cruisers. I made it a point to seek out the BMW rider (not hard) and began to bug him about his bike while he was trying to finish his hamburger. Mr. Overstreet was very tolerant of me and I tried to direct him to our site (Hello Mr. Overstreet!). Sometimes when I go on a ride to meet others from the board I expect to see another R. Sometimes I happen to pass one going the other direction on the Parkway or something, but it is always a special treat whether I expect it or not. We get to chat about ABS and Surging, you know things the cruiser crowed has no clue about.
I don't know how many miles we did, probably around 100, so not a long day, but a great day for sure. Maybe next year Tyler can ride with me on a camping trip. He needs to grow into some good gear though.

Glad to hear you got your son out on the bike today. It's good to break them in easy with short rides and lots of breaks. Make it fun for them and take a break whenever they need one. Maybe sometime next summer I'll get my son down to the New River gorge area for a camping trip (Watoga SP?). Maybe....
