I have a 2004 R1150RT. Has anyone put a luggage rack on top of the rear/tail box? Love the bags, but pretty small.

Re: Luggage rack
Not done it myself, but several forum members have used a modified breadboard and an adaptor for mounting a rack. I've got a Kappa top box fitted to a dedicated mounting system.

Atop the box itself??
Not seen it - (not yet!)
The RT top-box is only about 23 litres in volume. I did rig up a custom fitting on my Rockster for one, ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/rockburne ... 2402529933 ) but after a few weeks of use I realised that it was simply too small (although it looked really good), and I went back to my ancient square Givi.
(I still have that custom built rack if anyone wants a BMW RT top-box rack for their R1150R/Rockster/K1200RS, but I sold the box itself.)
Do you have the full-size panniers? got any pics?
Re: Luggage rack
I fitted a couple of long plated handles off an electrical control panel to the flat top of an LT top box. I used spreader washers both sides to avoid damage to the plastic and assembled them with RTV sealant. Check in the handle section of your local DIY store for something to suit.
I only used them to mount light and bulky items like a sleeping bag. I'd not want to carry heavy stuff too high up.

Re: Luggage rack
I had an R1150RT with top box . Since I had a small luggage rack from a 1985 K100 , that I was not using I mounted on top of lid. Drill four holes and you're set . Caution the luggage rack has a slight curve to it , so find the center put some painters tape down , then put some tape next to it where you will drill the holes , get everything lined up , mark and drill then mount the rack . It is a small rack , but BMW does not want you to exceed 10 lbs. I used it to carry my bike cover. They should be easy to find and inexpensive .
Re: Luggage rack
Givi makes many different models to fit on top of their cases, most are between $80 -$100 but they do sell a "universal" one for $39

That's a forbidden link in the UK! But I can see there are a range of racks to suit all the Givi boxes in the UK site. All costing more than $39 as well.
If you just want to lash something light to the lid my DIY approach keeps the C of G slightly lower.
