another gear oil question...

Post by jasondo »

So in preparation of an upcoming trip i drained the gear oil today and what came out concerned me. First of all it was very little that drained out. Maybe enough to fill a coffee cup. Second it was very dark almost blackish green in color with a foul odor. Any ideas how this happened ? It's a 04 1150r and had 29k when i bought it now has 31k. Maybe original gear oil? Also how do i know how much to put back in. Someone told me fill until it pours put the upper fill port.

Also forgot to mention it was pretty thin. Almost watery...bike runs fine though.

how long has the oil been in there? there are some gear oils that ARE green.... Marine oils lol.

your question about how to fill, makes me think its your first one? so it could be pretty old...put some new stuff in it, ride for awhile, then drain a bit to check. I wouldn't worry too much.

but, yes, drain it, then fill til it dribbles out the top, put cap on. ride.

1 ltr. should do it. I'd change engine and final drive oil as well.

I change mine every year just to be alerted of any problems. I admit I do not measure the quantity that comes out. Always looks as good as new. Make sure you use GL5 spec whatever grade. No idea where it could go apart from the clutch housing. I'd imagine an oil leak would be visible externally ? Do the triple oil change and monitor carefully.
