Fitting a full sized left bag on R1150r

Post by johngellis »

I have been considering fitting a full sized left side bag for some time. An off last weekend which destroyed my current cut away bag created an incentive.

I purchased the muffler lowering kit from Happy Trail. I was very happy with it didn't really need any fettling.

The only problem remaining was the support for the bottom. I was going to use some aluminum angle screwed to the bottom of the case like others have done. I then noticed the support on the bottom of the bag lined up exactly with the Happy Trail bracket supporting the muffler.

I made a bracket out of 1 inch aluminum, and made the rubber support out of a rubber bung I found in the local hardware store. I machined two flats on the side.

I have full sized bags on my R1150R, I believe they came off of an R1150RT. The previous owner just removed the muffler and added a small chrome exhaust tip just after the plenum. It saves a lot of weight and the bike is not loud even without the muffler. The exhaust is directed somewhat down and the bottom of the left bag stays nice a cool. It try and get a picture in the next few days...

Zach http://www.zachauspuff.de/index_en.htm has a lowering kit for the exhaust that also includes an adapter to accomodate for the RT pannier.
(click on "R 850 / 1150 GS / A & R" and scroll to the bottom of the page)
I've used the kit without the bracket at convert my R1150R to Touratech Sega Pro panniers using a modified rack for the R1150GS with lowered exhaust.
(the rack is not available anymore).
