I watched that clip half a dozen times on another site...at first I thought he was trying to do a Max and take it past balance point and recover but he got spat off so quick...was he over the Finnish line...was it even on the last lap...they sometimes look back through their legs like that...maybe by throwing his weight back to take a look he threw his weight back far enough to cause the bike to flip...it's all very odd...and very embarrassing for him...lucky he's OK.

I'm not sure I would call a professional road racer a "squid" regardless of a strange crash like this. This is not some pimple faced stunter busting his butt on a public street.
What I think happened is he was catching a quick peek with the "under the ass" technique, the balance point changed and a spinning rear tire hooked up suddenly and put him on his arse.
There would have been no reason at all for an intentional wheelie (although it's possible) as this was not the final lap. You can see the guys who passed the crasher are still racing.

Anyone know why they use the "under the ass" look-see rather than an over the shoulder look? Looks awkward and risky.
The first thing they told us in road race school anyway, was "don't look back". Of course everybody does. Even Rossi. Of course in his case "behind him" is often where everyone else is!

Six seasons on 175 Penton Jackpiner Hare Scramblers, a couple years amateur drag racing on street bikes and a few years at Bonneville in the "Vintage" class is the best I can offer. And I never looked back, under the ass OR over the shoulder.

Oh, and I watch racing on TV a lot too (hee-hee).

And I'm not trying to tell anybody anything about road racing motorcycles.
I just have tremendous respect for all racers (Pros, anyway) and tend to be a bit over-defensive about them when they're not around to defend themselves.
That might include you too I suppose if you weren't such a smart ass.

I've also been pretty close to several pro racers most people would recognize. They all tended to do their talking on the race track, not talking trash on the internet. Probably when they still only had 2 seasons on a real race bike, too.
