System cases

Post by bimmer83is »

Does the exhaust need to be lowered in order to instal system cases. Are there different system cases to purchase depending on the type of exhaust you have. I have heard things about lowering the exhaust but don't understand why someone would do this.

TIA.......Vinny

The exhaust interferes with a "full size" case. So the R1150R left-side case has an indentation to clearn the exhaust. It eats into interior space.

Some have lowered the exhaust allowing a case that does not have the indentation, increasing capacity.

But if you order system cases from BMW, you'll get the "dented" ones, no problem.

1150R and 1150GS cases have the exhaust space. RT and RS cases are full-size. The latter require either removal of the can (cheap fix) or a can lowering kit (expensive fix). Purchase either and siut yourself if you get them at the right price. I'm like many others - I've fitted a full left and have a spare stock case gathering dust. I'll keep it and change it all back to stock when it gets sold with the can back on.

And if you go with the City Cases instead of the System Cases note
that the indentation eats a large percentage of the available space.
It's more like getting 1.5 city cases.

Yup, the GS and RR system cases are the same with the left side bag allowing for the pipe. You'll see the occasional pic of an RR with a lowered pipe to accomodate a full sized bag. IMHO its not worth the effort to lower the pipe just to use a larger system case, as even with the bag made for the pipe it holds quite a bit.
