Avon ST 1200 mile report

Believe it or not, I squeezed 5500 miles out of my original Metzler Sportec. The steel belts were peeking through so new tires were in order. I did a lot of research and initally thought about ordering the Z6 but read a lot of positive reviews on the Avon ST's. My expectations were surpassed! There was no drastic degradation in handling and the tire looks great for after 1200 miles (see pictures). I highly recommend the Avon's as a great alternative to the Z6. I will buy a pair of Z6 as my next tires and see how they fair.

I see pics of tire wear going out to the edge, and feel so inadequate as a rider. The best I've been able to do so far is to graze the elephants on my Z6s.

Don't feel badly DK. I'd have to use a belt sander to scuff mine to the edge.

I'm about to fit my third set of Azaros. 16,000 km out of the first set, 15,000 km on the second, and really happy with performance and wear. We are getting 'mixed' results down this way with the Z6, so I'm just not prepared to try them. Some are happy, some don't like the wear rate or grip in the wet. Comes down to individual riding styles and experiences I guess.

What are your thoughts on the WET performance of your STs, They were good for me in the dry, but thier performance in the wet made me try Z6s and I think they are a better tyre in dry and the wet.

Call me a fair weather rider or wimp but I have zero experience in the rain with these tires! It has been fairly dry in Houston, Texas for the past couple of months. Believe it or not it was 81 degrees and sunny (27.22C) last Saturday. Next time it rains, I will take it for a spin just to check it out the ST's performance.

No worries! I'm still removing seat material from my butt when I first heaved the Rockster into a corner. It took me a while to get used to the Rocksters heft. Now the weight works for me in that it provides rock solid stability and the R engine's low center of gravity also contributes to my confidence as I fling the Rockster corner to corner.

I've not actually gotten to the point of shifting weight across the seat, never mind off of it. I find the Rockster to be very stable, even heeled over. I will be doing an Advanced Rider Training course next season to try and fix that.

You probably don't need to hear this, but if you wait till the 2nd or 3rd good rain before testing the tires, you'll be able to test more safely...you know, first rain of the season is the slipperiest.
