R1100R ABS sensor gap adjustment

Post by pdoege »

Hello -

I am trying to find information on properly gapping/cleaning the ABS sensors on my R1100R.

I am having my ABS system lights go into fault mode about 50% of every start and I am trying to track down the culprit.

I have tested the battery voltage, btw. The battery is Ok, though I am tempted to pick up a new WestCo for the hell of it.

Hi Peter,

You might post this over on Advrider on the Blood, Sweat, and Gears forum. They do a lot of wrenching over there. Good luck.

Thanks Sara -

I lurk over at ADV, I'll dig around the site a bit.

I had problems with the ABS on my old R1100R. It would fail to start up on the first ride in the morning, but would start if I rode for 10 minutes and then killed the engine and started again. I replaced the battery twice and it was fine for 6 months but the problem would always come back. I reasoned in the end that the battery in standard from was not up to the job unless it was brand new. So in the end I just ignore it. I suspect the options were up the amps from the bike charging system and or put an upgrade battery on.

I found the same thing would happen with my '96 R1100R. This is my second bike. I sometimes wouldn't ride it often enough to keep the battery fully charged. As a result, the ABS light would sometimes come on. Since I started using a Battery Tender, I no longer have the problem. I also clean the ABS wheel sensors periodically. It's amazing how much dirt they accumulate.

Another thing

....

This may be way off base.

I've noticed that if I hold off cranking the engine until just before the ABS lights light I never get a ABS fault on startup.

I sit down, time the flashes, and right before the lights are due to turn on I nail the starter. Works like a charm.

Hard to say whether this is unrepeatable voodoo or not.

I have a new Odyssey PC680 on the way....

Update...

I ordered the Odyssey PC680 and installed it this weekend.

The old battery was at the right voltage (12.88V), but something was wrong as the ABS lights still flashed in spite of all the diagnostics checking out.

With the new battery in everything is working fine. No more ABS faults on startup.

Go figure.
