G’day All,,
My daughter has to give a talk at school on a topic that is currently in the news, and she has chosen “Lane splittingâ€Â. Lane splitting is technically illegal in some (all?) Australian states, but the law is not generally enforced. The “National Transport Commission†(whoever they are!) is now advocating that each state determines an appropriate fine and enforce the ban. The suggestion has generated quite a deal of interest and comment, as you can imagine.
The reason for my post is this: a while ago, someone posted a reference to some survey about the impact of motorcycles on traffic, which diminished to almost zero when lane splitting occurred. I seem to recall a “co-efficient†of something or other.
Does anyone know the details of the survey?
Thanks in advance

Howdy Fred.
I don't know of the article you're after.
However, I periodically lane split, but mostly only thru stationary traffic.
A bike cop did spring me once, spliting thru slow moving traffic and he gave me a mouthful. He did say however that stationary traffic was ok.
That was in Ringwood.
fwiw

california the traffic capitol of the world [so cal anyway] does alow what it calls lane sharing which i do everytime i ride. mostly for me its for saftey. i cant see what the impact on traffic would be since there are so few bikes compared to cars. either way if i could'nt do it i probably would'nt ride as much
