Sargent seat question

I've read a lot of good things here about the Sargent seat and have decided to try one. Since I don't carry a passenger very often, I was planning to buy the front only. However, when I called Sargent they said the front only will not fit with the stock rear seat; it's designed for use with the rear cover?? I know I've seen some pictures here with the Sargent and the stock rear seat. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Sounds strange to me...they modified my front seat only, on two different bikes. Did you inquire about any specific model seat? Or just having foam replaced/reshaped?
Momo on this board is selling his Sargent for a fair price...

That seems strange, but I guess that Sargent would know. Could they have meant that the cover wouldn't MATCH (as opposed to fit) the rear portion?
I have the Sargent passenger seat and am using the stock BMW tall rider's seat - they fit together just fine. (I got the Sargent passenger seat at a BMW Rally after listening to my son complain for three days about the BMW "comfort" seat.) The Sargent cover material is slightly different than the BMW material, but you really have to look closely to see the difference.

The Sargent seat is a great upgrade over the original for long range comfort.

How Sargent explained it to me was that the rear stock seat will fit if you "jam" it against their front seat. I guess the contour of their seat goes back further than the BMW front seat. It might be fine but I just wanted get some opinions before I buy one. Unfortunately, I can't find a dealer around here who carries Sargent so I have to order it.

Me too. The Sarge and the stock seat work fine. They must need to sell some passenger seats?

What they all said, Sargent front seat and stock rear work fine together. It's not a 100% perfect match, but pretty darn close.

Toner, that was the picture I remembered seeing, I had just looked it up when you posted it. Is that the CarbonFX cover on the seat? It's a very close match to the rear.

Yes, according to the receipt it's the Carbon FX material. This seat is "da bomb!". On the tall stock Rockster seat I'd be in pain w/in 30 miles... It just hit me in the wrong places. The Sargent lets me ride 300 miles w/out complaint.

another data point for you - i use the sargent saddle with the passenger seat with no issues. it can feel a little tight when installing the seats, but it goes (and stays) together with no problem. looks fine too.
my sargent seat allowed me to forget ass-pain, and focus on knee pain.

Has anyone had theopportunity to compare different seats for comfort and looks. The big three; Corbin, Mayer and Sargent all make good seats I wonder which is the most comfortable over long distances? Any fact based opinions. Wardieone

I've done tens of thousands of miles on both Corbin and Sargent. My personal preference is for the Corbin, although I currently have a Sargent. My wife (pillion) also prefers the Corbin. Both are excellent seats, and very comfortable for a long time. They both start off very firm, but the Corbin seems to mould a little better to our butts, and is just that smidgeon more comfortable.
Either would be a good seat.

Seat won't latch

I just got my Sargent seat from RL Motercycles and I can't get the rear seat to latch. It will not latch even with the front seat removed. Has anyone else had this problem?
I figure I will either have to lower the latch on the seat or raise the catch on the bike and if anyone has done either I would like to know how it was done.
In any case, the seat looks good. I was happy with the prompt delivery and price ($530). I got the grip tex because they say it is cooler and in Sacramento I ride in the heat a lot. I hope it is not too bad to clean or to wipe dry in the morning dew. Anybody have experience with this material?

This sounds dumb, but have you pushed with ALL your might? Sometimes it takes some serious mojo to get that latch to catch...

Hey Artattack,
I purchased a front and back 2nd hand last summer and had the same problem with latching the rear. Essentially, the little bracket that is fastened to the bottom of the seat does not extend far enough away from the seat.
The fix I came up with was simply to remove the bracket and install a washer on each screw between the seat and the first rubber bumper.
This got me enough clearance and I've had no furuther problems.

Now your passenger just needs a nice BACKREST for that cushy seat!
