Will painting my Edition 80, diminish its value?

I am thinking about having my Rockster painted, I would like to replace the cheesy decals on my "limited edition" bike. I say cheesy, because for the price involved decals should not have been in the equation.

I would usually say never modify a special edition vehicle. But BMW couldn't give these bikes away, so I don't know how much mods are gonna make w/ the resale value.

You're the one riding it, looking at it, taking care of it....if you think it looks 'cheesy'...have some fun and personalize it! (The only thing that would really make the value drop is a "Conan the Barbarian rescuing Bikini Clad Maiden" custom airbrush paintjob on the tank!).... and remember..cheesy is in the eye of the beholder!

We Rockster owners are the outcasts of the BMW clan. Our bikes are garish looking and nary a typical BMW owner would bother with it. Nobody else really want it because it's a BMW. These things don't hold value worth a damn, so just go with it and make yourself happy. I happen to like my orange/black paint scheme. Otherwise, I'd have it repainted.

Diminsh its value as a "Classic"? Surely. BUT, isn't the bike's value to you, more important?

If you're really concerned you COULD purchase a full set of the LE80 decals and hang on to them... then you could include those with the bike if/when you sell it (or at the least they'll be around when your heirs inherit the bike.

How about-

(1) Buying R1150R tank and side pieces in a color scheme you prefer? Might be cheaper than repaint.

(2) Keep original pieces in case you decide to sell (thinking the Edn 80's worth more in original condition).

(3) Or just sell the bike and get something else.

My Edn 80's already yellowing, but that's the nature of the beast. Planning to ride it a long time, with imperfections adding character. Sure it's garish (aren't all Rocksters?), and the decals are cheap, but that's the charm: like a somewhat homely German Frau with bad makeup (visions of my beloved high school German language teacher!).

Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the Rockster, especialy the Edition 80, I just don't get the whole decal thing. It is something that has puzzled me since I bought it, over a year ago. Next year I will be looking to trade it in towards a K1200R, or maybe a R12GS, I can't afford to keep two bikes right now.
