checking tire pressure

Post by dwayne »

Okay, this will go down as the lamiest post I have ever done..well not really, but here goes:

Ummm, I've yet to check (...not cheque) my air pressure, and with 5300Km's on her...

Here is the dumb dumb question: without looking in the manual, cause it's in the bike and I'm gettin' ready for bed, and no, I don't share a room with the bike...yet... tire pressue for single rider with lightly loaded system cases, and 180 #....210# Rider would be???

Anyone also recomend a good tire pressure air thingy? Ummm, whatever.

do you have any idea how many (very slightly) different answers your are likely to receive to this question?

I run 40/41 PSI. front/rear (and keep the shocks soft, to keep the bumps from kickin my butt)

tire pressure is critical, make sure this is done soon and often!

i just realized that you mentioned kms, damn american standard measures. here's some metirics for ya 2.8129/2.8833 kg/cm front/rear

i'm 150 lbs(68.039 kg) and keep the tires the same naked or with cases.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

I am set up just about like you and run 41psi rear and 38psi front on my Z6's and I check it at least once a week using an acupressure gauge. I got mine from Aerostich but have seen similar gauges of equal quality at most of the local auto parts stores.
Yer wanted by the police and my wife thinks your dead.

Here is a link to a thread I posted in Off Topic about a gadget that helps you keep track of the pressure. I'm still using them, and still check to make sure they are correct, and so far they have not disappoiinted me yet. Inexpensive, too :D I was told to keep pressure at 38 psi Front, 40psi rear by my salesman at the dealership. He didn't make allowances for weight or cargo.

I run Z-6's and I run 32psi front and rear.I'm 190 lbs. How many miles do you get out of the tires with the higher pressure? I got 5500 miles on the stock dunlops and 6500 miles on the last Z-6's.

Now that is cool. Okay, I'm ordering those. Kirsti do you have exact model I need, or do I just give them the bike model and year? Ok, never mind I got it. Thanks for posting that!

... no shipping to Canada

220+ lardy pounds. Usually 42psi rear and 39 front. But if this gets down as low as 38psi rear and/or 36front I don't worry especially for the local twisty roads. I check it before each ride and I use the Roadgear digital gauge.

Right now I'm running Pilot Road on the rear and a soon-to-be-replaced Z6 on the front. (matching my tires has never been a priority since the front one lasts about 2 1/2 times as long as the rear. Like I said...'lardy')

I was told by a competent BMW mechanic that if you check your tires cold and then again hot, you should not have more than about a 5 lbs difference. If much more than that, you are running to low pressure. They get hotter when low and will self destruct very quickly if you ride along on a mostly flat tire.

36 to 38 front/42 rear.

As a check, I believe the recommended difference between cold and hot pressures should be 10% of less or as Boxer said, your pressure is too low.

Dwayne:

If you really want the accu-pressure valve caps, send a PM with what you want and your address. I'll order them for you and then mail them to you when they arrive. You will need to hurry though because I will be traveling from July 31- August 29 with only 5 days back in Texas and three of those I am in a conference. In fact, I'll be in Canada for a while, but not close enough to deliver them. I'll be in Newfoundland.

I checked both tires just a few minutes ago. I had not checked them with a gauge in about one month. The front tire was at 37 and the back tire was at 38. So the cap was still showing green since it was not more than 3-4 pounds underinflated. Like I said earlier, I try to keep the pressure at 38 for front, 40 for back so I put some more air in them.

Tire pressure

I run 37 front, 40 rear, Metzler Z6s. I have the little indicating valve stem caps and they really do work. I weigh 220# (Plus clothing), carry maybe 40 or 50 # in my system cases.
