Can you see any markings on the shock? (Manufacturer, model number, part number, etc.?) There are a lot of red springs out there -- none from BMW original equipment, as far as I know. Perhaps a picture would help.

The spring color is not what was original on the bike. OEM springs are normally taylored to a 165 pound rider(s), so someone with additional weight might have chosen to change the spring. The best bet is to ask of the person that sold you the bike.....they might have an inkling as to the answer.

Another way, if you must absolutely know, is to remove the spring and measure the K constant or pounds of force per inch of vertical travel. 8)

Yup it's original , its a higher rate (stifer) than the std. unit .My 02 1150r had the stock rear spring & would bottom w/me the wife & luggage ..my 041150a had a red spring & almost never bottomed even under severe loads !!! NOW my 1200ra is even more gooder than either of those

I answered this on the 1200r page but I'll do it again !!Yess it's original !! & if you're a larger person you'll love it .. If you go to the parts dept or fische pages of some dealers(max bmw ) you'll see it as an optional rear spring unit
