i need to change my oil filter, any cross/over tool?

where do i buy one?

I bought mine from a Harley dealer. Fortunately, the same wrench fits my BMW and Harley. When you go to the store, take the filter with you to ensure you get the correct size wrench. Most Pep Boys sell the wrenches. You will pay 2X more if you buy one from a BMW dealer.

PepBoys, Autozone, Kragen etc. Just get the right size as recommended above.

I just bought one at NAPA...Buuutttt! The problem with these, is often they are made for a variety of filter sizes and the top part will not go all the way up into the recess around the filter and the bottom part is the part that needs to grip the filter.

The one I got is a very sturdy steel wrench with a 3/8" ratchet hole to turn it with, but I took it home and cut off the top half that I didn't need. Now it fits neatly around the bottom end of the filter.

Once you get the BMW filter off, you may want to try the K&N oil filters. Best feature is the 17mm nut on the bottom for easy removal. Favorably reviewed in the oil filters exposed article (buried in the archives of IBMW riders forum, I think).

The German made BMW oil filter tool will probably last your life time and eventuality be passed onto your grandson to become a conversation piece.

So, why not spend the extra $$$$.

Look for one labeled "76mm 14 flats" that doesn't flare out too large from the I.D. so it will fit up inside the filter tunnel. I was fortunate that mine fit perfect. It was around $5 at an auto parts chain store.

Doing maintenance on my new to me bike. Necessity dictated some fast thinking. I made one out of a coffee can, cut top/bottom off, rolled it tight. Lined the inside with duct tape. Inserted it around the filter and used a normal oil filter wrench to apply the pressure. I'll probably purchase the BMW tool but this solution worked for me in a pinch.

Three (3), count 'em, three autoparts stores today and NOTHING. I'll keep trying. I'm too cheap to buy a genuine new BMW tool when the same functionality can be had for $4.00.

Try checking the tool section in a Sears store.

Anger, go ahead and spring for it. I have gone through 3 aftermarket/generic oil filter wrenches in three years. They become "rounded" out, or they won't fit up into the filter cavity well, or in the case of my last acquisition, after cutting the top part off, it now will not fit the filter correctly at the bottom. I gave up and just bought the damn BMW wrench for $19. It was a frustration purchase!...and it has the same 3/8" socket hole and big wrench nut at the bottom as that other one mentioned. And years from now I can tell my grandchildren about it as it hangs up there on the wall...

surely.... buying good quality tools ( BMW tools) to work on your BMW is a reflex not a debate, as the first time you use it, it has paid for it's self

Along the lines of oil filters, do you have to use a BMW oil filter or is it the same as a car filter that can purchased at a parts store?

I'd stick to the BMW filter for quality purposes. I'm not sure how well aftermarket filters are constructed or the quality of the filtration.

Now, the $5 aftermarket oil filter wrench I bought six years ago is a bargain compared to the BMW tool. Why pay more for something you'll use so infrequently?

Try here, drive to this place, look over there, drive to sears and then to the auto parts store. $40.00 dollars in gas and 20 hours later, you saved $14.00 dollars. Spend the extra money, keep your local BMW dealer in buisness so they don't close like so many dealers have.

3 auto parts store AND sears all on the main road I take to go home. Extra gas, zero, extra time (no more than I'd have spent watching TV). Saving $14, priceless. If I have to, I'd probably mail order the part along with a couple extra bits and pieces from Chicago BMW which saves me gas money making a trip across town in heavy traffic. I'll mail order the tool as a last resort if Sears doesn't have it tonight on the way home.

Anyone have a BMW part number they care to donate to a fellow R1150R rider

I know, I know, if I went to the local shop, I wouldn't have to know this information. Thanks, please drive thru.

Well, Sears was a no-go. All they had was the standard metal strap and three-prong concentric reducing clamp that I didn't want to mess with. My theory is that Sears is now another Kmart.

Anyone with a BMW part number out there? I'd like to order one from Chicago BMW with some other maintenance items.
