External Fuel Filter ?

Tank is off. Replaced Air Filter, connected Battery Tender charging line,
removed and replaced all cable ties, (all to tight)
While tank is off, want to replace fuel filter.
Question. See from recent post that plate nuts easy to break off. Thinking of also replacing internal filter, but replacing same filter externally in line above disconect valve. Is same (internal type) filter okay for external application in fuel line above disconect valve?
Previous post mentioned doing this, but looking for a post on actual job if there is one.
Any info appreciated..

One benefit to having the filter in the tank is it can't leak

I believe the fuel filter is after the pump which builds enough pressure to blow off hoses and even spit filters if the line gets kinked. If that happens, and it has happened to me, I'd rather it be inside the tank. This can be dangerous.

Has anyone who's done the external fuel filter mod had the same experience as awagnon? Is it common and that's why moving the filter outside the tank is not a more popular modification?

Thanks for the link for fitting the external filter.
Will leave this mod till out of warranty.
Cant see pressure being a problem with filter/lines. If lines are rated to 50psi then actual pressure would be less than half that, safety factor etc.
Mentioned also that if filter fails (splits) in tank not a problem. I think this would prevent fuel delivery, could be wrong here.

In my case, the quick disconnect on the fuel line from the tank was not fully seated and therefore closed. This "dead headed" the fuel pump blowing the hose off the filter inside the tank. Of course, the bike wouldn't run, but also didn't get fuel all over. The BMW mechanic said he had seen ends blown off filters and filters split. I suspect BMW put the fuel pump and filter in the tank for a reason. As infrequently as it needs changing, I'd just leave it where it is.
