Fork Corrosion

Post by single650 »

Any of you UK rock owners taken your bike in to get the dreaded fork corrosion dealt with under guarantee?

Mine is just showing a small patch and as it came with the BMW used bike guarantee I wondered whether it was worth looking into.

Done it once under the New bike warranty - no problems, BMW are aware of the problem, but not tried it yet under the 2nd hand Dealer warranty.

Let me guess you have blue ones. I've had the forkes changed once and now a year later they are starting to go again. So I'm dumping the bike because I can see that this could become a yearly issue. I would get a silver one they seem to be tougher, but the dealer is shut down.

We didn't get the silver one in the UK. :( I've never seen one in the flesh.

To be honest, I don't think it would be too difficult to get the fork legs resprayed properly by a professional painter. (there's some guys on the "s" forums who have done it themselves.)

Respray is the way my thoughts are going. I don't think its worth the grief of chasing BMW.

Hi

I bought a used rockster (04) with the 1 year BMW warranty. They replaced the forks because of corrosion under warranty while they were prepping the bike for me. Dealer was Cooper Reading.

I would ask your dealer to change them, and then if / when they go again, tackle the problem yourself.

I think if you are meticulous over cleaning them and topuching in any chips, then they may not blister up.

Hope this helps

PS. Has anyone found a good match for a touch up stick for the blue of the frame or forks. BMW don't do one.
