Changing Pannier locks
I've been away from this forum for a while but hope to be a regular now! I have a small problem at the moment - I was punted down the road by a car from a stop-sign a few days ago, to the detriment of the both panniers, although the BMW agent in Cognac (I live in France now) says the bike's fine (ap...

Re: Difficulty changing gear
Just an amatuer here... but my changes were getting rough and first was getting a bit clunky from nuetral, but nothing you could pin down. Then the clutch started feeling 'strange'... and then at about 15,000 miles the slave cylinder let go! Replaced, and everything is back to normal now (except the...

Re: Headlight lens
Interested in the LH/RH dip problem as I have a UK-market (drive-on-left) R1150R which now lives in (drive-on-right) France... Fortunately there's no annual test here in France (MoT in UK, CT in France) so my UK Certificate of Conformity will get me French 'plates' soon without any physical inpectio...

Re: How many miles are on your bike?
'03 1150 - only 17,000 miles so far. Bought in '05 with just 2,600 on the clock! Used for almost daily commute in the UK for two years until semi-retirement to SW France in August '07. Now a fair-weather bike and only doing about 100 miles a weekend - and only if it's sunny! (Don't knock it - I serv...

Re: Knock, knock, knocking...
Sorry, late in adding to this post. I had the same a while back on an '03 R1150R, with about 16,000 miles showing then. LH pot too. Used the bike regularly for commuting for about two years. Moved abroad last summer and left it laid up for about two months. Collected it in September and did fairly q...

The better insulated your winter gloves are the cooler the grips feel! Back in the UK and commuting every day regardless of weather in my heavy-duty winter gloves I didn't feel the grips were hot enough. Here in France riding when I want to (even though it's February) in mid-season gloves they are s...

Mission accomplished... Oil level widow changed! Located the sealant (only in france would you you find silicone gasket on the shelves of your local Supermarket for less than €4!), phoned my UK dealer for moral support and got stuck in. Removal of the original seal was not as easy as suggested...

Thanks Cyclerob. This is probably a silly question... but how important is the sealant? I only ask, because over here in deepest France I'm a long way from motorcycle 'civilisation' (great roads 'tho...) and my patchy French is going to struggle with oil-resistant silicon sealer! I'll try our local ...

Changing oil level inspection window
I'm ready to change my oil level inspection window ('03 R1150R) and thanks to info on a previous thread will adopt the hot-nail and screw method for removal. A few questions before I start. How much efort will be needed to remove it? Don't want to be too brutal and cause damage Same with inserting n...

Thanks OU812, Please don't think that I don't appreciate many of the US's virtues, and I think I agree with you on many points... one of the reasons I left the UK was that France is still 'lagging behind' the way of life UK. My point was that 'low lifes' are armed as well - isn't this just raising t...

A frightening thread which will only reinforce a European's perceived opinions of life in the US, whether right or wrong. I'm open to correction, but I would think that most of us on this side of the Atlantic would be appalled that anyone would even consider carrying a gun, for any reason. There are...

Thanks Boxermania - it certainly isn't an 'experiment' I aim to repeat! If I have got away with it this time I'll be very grateful to the BMW guardian fairy! Awagnon - thanks for the tips. I'd thought about using a Honda version of the Hotnail, but my Bank said I didn't qualify for a loan that big. ...

Thanks again everyone - will try the red-hot nail as soon as I can source a new window. Has anyone else had a similiar overheat experience? If so could they either re-assure me or advise on any problems to look out for in the future? Everything felt fine on the 10-mile test run, no extra or differen...

Thank you everybody for your help... will order parts and set to work soon. Oil level window
My oil level window is so cloudy that I can no longer see the level - definately not condensation, just emptied and changed oil! Is it a difficult/expensive job to change the window? Also I have that oil weep from the filler cap which was cured during a service by the dealer once but has now reurred...

Thanks all, I'll take Cyclerob's advice and bleed the clutch through annually - it was a proper job to replace, on any vehicle they seem to start with one component and then build the car or biike around it around it. Judging by the bill and the amount they had to remove I guess it's the slave cylin...
