Re: R1150R maintenance and repair in Northern Virginia
That would be Lap Nguyen's old place that DMM referred to here: There is a place in Alexandria that once did work on BMWs, but the owner/head mechanic passed away and no one there seems to have taken his place with the necessary specialized knowledge. Of course, they might suffice for basic matters....

Yeah, Morton's is the closest of the BMW shops. Actually, Bob's BMW in Jessup, MD is about 20 miles closer to you than Morton's (roughly a 37 mile drive vs. a 56 mile drive from Tysons Corner). They are both quality places. I've also used Anton, and he's a straight-up fellow. His prices are much be...

Re: Locked steering head on an 04' R1150R
Another basic suggestion: Is the sidestand down? If it is, that may the problem since there's a fuel disconnect switch that will not allow the bike to start if it's on it's sidestand and in gear. If the sidestand is up and you're not hearing the fuel pump whine when you turn on the ignition, the sid...

Couldn't tell you how large the turkey vultures in our neck of the woods are compared to your buzzards, but they sure aren't small birds. Came across one feasting on roadkill at the apex of a turn on Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah mountains a few years ago -- I had to duck to keep myself from getti...

Re: Locked steering head on an 04' R1150R
My only suggestion is a little along the lines of the "is it plugged in" answer when your computer doesn't boot. Here goes: If you're not doing it already, try jiggling the handlebars back and forth as you turn the key in order to release pressure on the steering head locking mechanism. If...

Heh -- if and when the time comes, I'll let you know (I'll also be sure to post things in the classified section).aure0011 wrote:I would be interested in that givi topcase and rack if you decide to sell seperately.

Re: To sell with or without farkles.
That's something I've been wondering, too. I've got my 2004 R1150R pretty farkled up, and am considering selling it for something smaller and lighter (an F800S is on my radar screen). I've considered offering it at a higher price point as is (with some room for negotiation) in the hopes of finding s...

Re: So the left side of my bike and my left shin are...
Alls well that ends well. The Morton's tech rode up to my house yesterday and in 15 minutes had the valve cover off and the gaskets replaced. Sure enough, the gasket around the spark plug was folded over and was the source of the leak. Gave him a couple of beers to take back to the shop (turns out h...

Sparky I'm happy for you, that's a dealer that is worthy of representing the brand, it's just a shame that there are few and far between. You should make mention of their service to the BMW area representative. Good point -- I'll be sure to do that. Since I'm very impressed by their response, I'll ...

Re: So the left side of my bike and my left shin are...
Update: Talked to the dealer today, and the service rep immediately agreed it sounded like they had made a mistake on their end. They are stepping up to the plate to take care of it: the service rep said they have a bike that needs some miles put on it, so tomorrow they are sending a tech up to my h...

Re: So the left side of my bike and my left shin are...
Thanks for the help, all. Sounds like this is the culprit, but I'll shine a flashlight in there later today to see if I can see any gasket pinched in there. I'll also call the dealer to see what they have to say -- this happened on Sunday and they don't open up again until tomorrow, so I've not had ...

Re: So the left side of my bike and my left shin are...
Hi Sparky, I had the same thing happen one time after adjusting my valves. If you had the valves set, the dealer would have had to take off the valve cover. When reinstalling the cover it's really easy to have the rubber seal (that goes around the spark plug hole) move out of position during reasse...

Check your oil after your next ride to see if it looks good in the sight glass. The oil may be topped up enough to be coming out of the filler cap. Look inside the cylinder, where the filler cap goes. You'll see a small rubber-ring gasket. Small dirt particles easily accumulates around this gasket ...

...coated with oil. #-o It's the first time I've ridden it since November, when I rode it home from a major service at my dealer. Don't know if this may have been a problem on my ride home from the dealer, because I rode home at night, in the rain, covered it up after it had dried out (again at nigh...

Re: Safety v looks & sound
Hmmmm.... I think you have a point, but I don't find it to be a particularly persuasive point. Obviously one example does not a trend make, but in my many years of internet surfing I have never heard of a boxer motor blowing and sending oil out its tailpipe. Frankly, outside of very high-stress situ...

Re: Louder Horn- Is There Room?
I replaced the stock with dual Fiamms. I didn't do the install myself -- Morton's BMW did it -- but they put it in the stock position with only some small brackets. One sits in front of the front shock, the other to the side. I'll try to get pics.

Re: Input needed on the good and the not so good of a R1150R
The way I like to describe my R1150R is as a jack of all trades but master of none: it does lots of things very well but is excellent at no one particular thing. If you want to tour, slap some BMW saddlebags and a windscreen of your choice and take it cross country. Strip it all off and fly naked to...

Re: Bad day- crashed my Rockster- need tech help
Sorry to hear about your accident, but glad to know that you seem to be OK! I'm by no means a mechanically inclined kind of guy, but this sounds remarkably like it involves your sidestand switch -- the one that cuts off the fuel to the engine if the bike is in gear and the sidestand is down. You wen...

Re: Potential NEWBIE needs your wise advice on screens and pegs
I have the touring windscreen, and while I find it makes the ride a little noisier (a moot point for me since I ride with earplugs) I also find no buffeting. That said, I'm only 5'8", although I am short-legged and long-torsoed. Another thing you might want to try is flying naked on your bike f...
