Re: Better MPG
I currently get about 45-48 MPG on my 2008 R1200R. Is there anything that can be done to improve the mileage per gallon? What about a Performance Controller? Also, my Rider's Manual states that by using 95 ROZ/RON Super fuel I can expect "reduced performance and consumption" Do they reall...

Re: Second bike ??
Suzuki DR650 for my commuting needs. Fun, light, easy to maintain and reliable. It gets ridden daily unless there's too much risk of hitting a patch of ice. The R1200R is my freeway flyer and gets used when the salt is off the roads. Both are great bikes that I'd recommend to anyone.

Re: Headlight dip question
Yes, there is a US and Euro version on the R1200R. My headlamp lens cracked and was replaced under warranty. After that I noticed drivers flashing their lights at me. I stopped and pointed it at a garage door and noticed the beam was higher on the left. It was replaced by the dealer with the correct...

Re: Bent front rim.
Sorry to hear of your troubles, but I found this shop to do a great job at a great price. It's amazing what kind of a hit your tires and wheels can take and still keep you on the road.

Re: Second Bike
I like my DR650 for dual sporting. Ton of fun, reliable, easy to work on, and lots of aftermarket stuff. BMW owns Husqvarna, they have an interesting bike in the TE630, but it sounds like they'll be offering a new model using the BMW 650 motor. Below is a link to the TE630, it's a nice looking bike....

I use Polaris snowmobile gloves for rainy weather. Decent performance in rain and temps down to about 40 or so.

Re: Front tire refresh
Good job and good writeup. I just popped a new rear tire on my Suzuki DR650 today and it was loads easier than the R1200R. I wish they had more of a valley in the rim, I think that would help quite a bit.

Re: How do you stretch your legs?
I just put my legs on the jugs. By the time my calves heat up, the kinks are pretty much worked out. High top boots allow a longer stay before the heat seeps through.

Re: For those who adjust their own valves
When I adjust my valves, they've usually drifted vary little if at all. While I check every 6K, I think I could go every 12 and not have a problem. YMMV

Re: Battery Going?
When my battery died it gave no warnings. Started fine one time, the next time just the typical clicking noise of a battery that's nearly dead. Put it on a load tester and see how it holds up.

Re: BMW R1200R Owners in Canada be very aware
Yes, one of the worst things you can do with your money is buy a motor vehicle, especially a new one. Speculating in the collector vehicle market could be an exception. I had never heard that BMWs hold their value any better than the other brands and they don't from what I've seen. Personal experien...

Re: Getting old
You need to keep active. We went caving a few years ago and a 74 year old gentleman hiked the steep path to Neversink Cave in Alabama, did a 162 foot rappel and then a 162 foot climb back out. He carried his own gear up and back down the mountain. What an inspiration! We should all be that capable a...

Re: Fluids
The dealer stated that since the oil changes are now 600 mile and 12K intervals, the oil used for the FD can be the same as used for the tranny. For peace of mind I still used the 75/140 synthetic gear oil for the FD which is what they recommended B4 the updated oil change intervals and volume reduc...

I've heard both sides of the story. They're both excellent bikes with a reputation for longevity. I still kinda miss my Vee, but not when it's time to adjust the valves.

Re: Filling the Fuel Tank
I usually fill it until I see gas in the red tube, but I don't fill it to the top. From what others have written on the board if you fill to the top you get about 1 gallon more than the BMW capacity listed in your owners manual.

Re: Engine blown - experiences with oil?
Mine used some oil during the breakin period, but It was never down a significant amount in only 1500 miles. At almost 18K miles I have no noticeable oil consumption. I can't imagine dropping multiple quarts of oil in such a short time, something else must be going on. I hope your dealer sticks up f...
